Jean Garcia is a stunner. Her 20-year-old daughter, Jennica, is obviously cut from the same cloth but is also beautifully coming into her own. But more than looks and achievements in their respective careers, what they are most proud of is the kind of relationship they share.
During the one-on-one interview with the mother-daughter tandem for their brand new endorsement deal for URC’s Cream All, Bulletin Entertainment learns Jennica would rather not talk about Mother’s Day. Not because she wants to ignore it—in fact, she seems to have evaded the topic so she won’t inadvertently reveal any surprise she may have for her mom. Jean, for her part, kids her daughter about what she wants to receive.
We've got a good thing going
Such is the relationship between the two—a light banter erupts every now and then, a clear sign of an enviable easy-going bond. While Jean would call Jennica “honey,” the latter is not beyond kidding her mother, “Nako, ibubuko kita rito” or would describe some of her antics as “nakakaloka,” followed by shared laughter.
Jennica says, “Sobrang masaya talaga ako na si mama talaga ‘yung mama ko… kasi para na kaming magkapatid.” But she is quick to point out that despite that fact, she knows where her boundaries are.
Indeed, limits are required even in a relationship built on trust and openness. “Wala siyang fears ‘pag dating sa akin,” Jean nevertheless says of her first-born.
Jennica, for her part, admits she could never keep a secret from her mother, “Kasi malalaman naman niya na meron eh.” Clearly, Jean reads her daughter well.
Ultimately, all she wants is for Jennica to come to her for anything, “Mas gusto kong alam ko—whether good or bad, negative or positive. Hindi naman ako mag-aadvice sa kanya na makaka-sama…”
All grown up
As a young adult, Jennica is clearly very level-headed, a testament to how Jean has raised her. When she already began earning money, Jean says Jennica would pay for some of their household bills to help her out.
But Jennica herself is at a threshold, already a young lady whose life is ahead of her. Having a daughter that’s growing up exposed to showbiz is something Jean says is “medyo scary, kasi alam ko yung business eh.”
She also warns her daughter to be wary of influences, even that of other young stars. “Nakikita mo naman ‘pag okay o hindi… Ako naman, guidance lang.”
Jean has already seen her daughter through a relationship before—with erstwhile love team partner, Mart Escudero. But while Jennica says, “I’m sure oo,” when asked if her mother freaked out, Jean points out, “Nung naghiwalay sila, hindi ko pinersonal ‘yung guy…”
But her request to Jennica: “Honey, please lang…”—and the mother and daughter say together with a laugh: “‘Wag ka muna magka-boyfriend!”
However during the interview, Jennica also reveals something even Jean has not heard from her before, “’Pag ako nagka-anak, ayaw ko ng babae. Nakikita ko naman sa kanya, oo mahal niya kami pareho ng kapatid ko [7-year-old boy, Kotaro], pero iba ‘yung gwardiya niya sa akin kasi babae ako,” she admits.
But despite that, Jean’s advice to her daughter is, “Love with all your heart… Love your family. Be responsible. Kailangan gamitin mo rin ‘yung utak mo…kasi yung mga mistakes na nadaanan ko, alam mo ‘yun. Pero sabi ko, 'Don’t close your heart'.”
Blending different tastes
Jean and Jennica currently appear on the same soap, GMA’s “Ina, Kasusuklaman Ba Kita?” as mother and daughter. While accepting these roles isn’t necessarily indicative of very similar preferences, Jean and Jennica admit they do have very different taste in a lot of things.
While they do like watching the same movies and, during down times, would find themselves bonding over Facebook in their garden, they have different taste in everything from shoes (mother likes heels, daughter likes flats) to make-up and beauty products. Jean likes to cook, while Jennica only recently expressed interest to learn how. Jean likes tea, while Jennica is a coffee lover.
But as mother and daughter once again find themselves working on the same project—this time as a tandem endorsing Cream All—they find another common ground.
Jean considers being tapped as endorsers of URC’s coffee creamer brand as a blessing; bonding over food is one thing they like to do. Jennica, meanwhile, finds that it gives her a good excuse to make her momma proud, so to speak. “Magtitimpla ako ng tiya-a na may cream! May effort na ako ngayon, ‘Ma, akong nagtimpla niyan’,” she kids.
Cream All’s brand manager, Pepe Roderos, points out that the two ladies make the perfect ambassadors for their brand. For them, a modern product that works with a variety of beverages from coffee, tea, hot chocolate (which Jean says her son loves), or even for cooking, would be best represented by the two celebrities that are versatile, and that appeal to their target market of young adults and young, cool mothers.
But most of all, the amazing mother-daughter relationship they share makes Jean and Jennica not just Cream All’s ideal brand endorsers but also a very good example of what makes a near-perfect state of love and trust.
