Stronger than ever

MANILA, Philippines - The truth is that the four members of the Mocha Girls did not stage a walkout . Instead, they were given walking papers by their manager Lord Byron Cristobal after returning home from a series of shows in Guam.

‘Mocha Uson got the ire of other members when she stopped them from sitting down and socializing with customers in and/or out of the workplace which was against the law and punishable by imprisonment,’ said Cristobal.

For her part Mocha, said ‘Good things do fall apart so that better options and professional growth can take place.’

The new Mocha Girls include Mocha Girls Jhane, multi-talented singer-guitarist and Mocha Girls Mae, former EB Babe who is in the cast of GMA 7’s Diva. Mae who is Mary Mae De La Cerna in real life is known for her good voice and sexy, cosplay dances.

The new group is stronger than ever and its gigs will go on as scheduled. Mocha will always be part of it despite her Sunday regular segment Hot Five on TV5’s Linggo Sa POV.

Anne Curtis feels comfortable working with ex-flame Richard Gutierrez in In Your Eyes

"Di ba nabangga ako last year? Ngayon ko lang nakuha. So, I'm so happy. It's back in my arms again," sabi ni Anne.

Kaya natagalan, paliwanag ng aktres, ay dahil "kinailangang order-in pa yung parts from abroad."

"Siyempre that's my first ever luxury car.

"It was really my choice last year na nag-decide ako na bumili.

WORKING WITH EX-BOYFRIEND.

Ako, naiilang ako siyempre kasi I've been very vocal sa pagsasabing gusto kong maka-work si Ate Clau. So siyempre, nati-tense ako pag kami ang magkaeksena. Sinasabi sa amin, 'O prepare na!' 'Tapos nakikita ko na ready na siya. 'Tapos ako, hindi pa. So kailangan ko, di ba, prepared and on my toes... She's very nice.

"Ah, hindi kami masyadong nagkakailangan ni Chard because aside from work, nagkakasama naman kami outside of work, kasi nga same group."

And, ah, but if you had asked me two years ago or mga three years ago, hindi puwede. Yung hindi ko pa siya kayang harapin. Pero ngayon we're super okey. That makes a big difference."

Wala bang feelings na bumalik?

"Wala! Walang ganoon," diin ni Anne. "I mean we're all just very comfortable working with each other."

OVER NIP-SLIP INCIDENT.

"You know, I'm just happy na I followed my dad's advice which was to not sue kasi the more pag-uusapan. Everyone is moving on. It was an accident. So, tapos na."

Kris Aquino back under the care of Dra. Vicki Belo

A casual chat led to a contract-signing.

In 2007, Kris Aquino and beauty mogul Vicki Belo had a public falling-out over the rumored affair between the host-actress' husband, James Yap, and an employee at one of Belo's clinics. James denied the allegation, and the incident led to Kris' resignation as endorser of the Belo Medical Group.

After three years, Kris Aquino has officially returned as the clinic's endorser.

The man who made the deal possible, Jojie Dingcong—also the consultant for the branding and imaging of the multimillion-dollar empire—related to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in a phone interview how the host-actress found her way back to the clinic of Dra. Vicki Belo.

Jojie began, "It started in January of this year. Kris just asked me something about this clinic, which was trying to get her as endorser. We were talking casually, then I just broached the idea, 'What if you go back to Belo?'"

There was a pause, before Kris threw back the question, "Okay lang kay doktora?"

Jojie, also the manager of the famous cosmetic surgeon, told her, "I'm just taking the liberties here... Pero okay lang ba kay Boy?"

Boy Abunda is the manager of Kris. He is also the endorser of another clinic, the Calayan Surgicentre.

The following month, Boy gave Kris the go signal. But, "we kept everything under wraps.

NO. 1 CELEBRITY ENDORSER. Out of curiosity, PEP asked about the talent fee. "The price is not even a big amount. Kris enjoys the services and products of Belo. She's comfortable with Dra. Vicki."

Joji continued, "She's actually set to have her treatment. These past months, since nasa daan siya parati nitong campaign period, nagkaroon ng freckles. She wants to get rid of them.

"That's the good thing about Kris. She doesn't hesitate talking about the truth. 'It's my body, I want to look good, I can do what I want to look good.' That makes her an effective endorser. That makes her the number one celebrity endorser."

And finally, on May 9, the contract was "signed, sealed, and delivered" to the studio of The Buzz, where Kris and Boy are hosts.

The two ladies didn't get to meet. "Dra. Vicki had to leave for the States. Kris was so busy with the election. Pero nag-usap sila sa phone. Matagal na silang okay."

Jojie added, "This is like a good beginning. The people involved are happy. It's a beautiful signal to everyone."

Indeed, peace is one of the best routes to happiness.

"Definitely, it will be a Christian wedding," ang sagot ng 26-year-old actor.

Lumabas na iyong court decision two years ago pa na null and void ang kasal nila."

high-rating shows ng TV5."

What's the buzz on KC?

KC Concepcion earned her “celebrity” tag even when she was a baby because of her famous parents, Megastar Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion.

Now that she has entered the world of entertainment, there’s just no stopping for this freespirited woman. She entered theater, graced dozens of magazine covers and television commercials, starred in various television programs, and top-billed movies.

The Mega daughter is continuously making a name for herself. With her desire to do more and more, breaks and opportunities just seem to rush in KC’s feet. Despite all the success, KC has never forgotten to reach out as she sticks to the responsibility given to her by the United Nation’s World Food Program as its National Ambassador against Hunger.

Constantly accepting new challenges, KC freshly stepped on a new phase in her career as she accepted co-hosting duties with the country’s King and Queen of Talk, Boy Abunda and Kris Aquino, in The Buzz. Having been blessed with the gift of glib, KC constantly gets praises from the two showbiz authorities.

In her very own segment in The Buzz, Kcxclusives, KC easily established rapport with her interviewees. In the past four weeks, she was able to interview Agua Bendita star Andi Eigenmann, drama princess Kim Chiu and Impostor stars Maja Salvador and Sam Milby. She was indeed successful in bringing out the true personality behind every celebrity she interviewed.

Prior to her entry to showbiz, KC was rarely seen on national TV. But every time she appears, whether in her mom’s concerts or guests in her mom’s show, her charming personality never failed to enthrall viewers.

As she matured, advertisers and dozens of endorsements came knocking on KC’s door. KC took these opportunities with delight and finished school. In 2003, she became MTV Asia’s VJ, her first “hosting” stint.

KC revealed that her mom and stepfather, Sen. Francis Pangilinan, only allowed her to enter mainstream show business after college. So after she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in International Corporate Communications in the American University of Paris last 2007, she started accepting offers from ABS-CBN, also her mother’s home network.

Showcasing her different facets, KC got her first television project in ABS-CBN show titled KC, From Paris to Pinas, a documentary on her four-year stay in Paris. After that, she embarked on her first drama anthology on the said network, I Am KC. When she appeared in Maalaala Mo Kaya’s Mansyon episode, she earned positive reviews. Her May Bukas Pa guesting was promising. Meanwhile, her portrayal of Vivian in the hit series Lovers In Paris really defined her as an actress.

Movie projects also came pouring in KC’s bucket. Her big screen team-up with Richard Gutierrez, For the First Time became a blockbuster in 2008. In fact, during the premiere night of the said film, hundreds of fans flocked to SM Megamall filling all its three levels just to have the glimpse of the love team. With her effective portrayal in the movie, she earned the Breakthrough Performance by an Actress in the 6th ENPRESS Golden Screen Awards. Now, KC is busy with her upcoming movie under Star Cinema, I’ll Be There, with her father, Gabby, as one of its main characters. This is the first time that KC and Gabby will work together in the silver screen.

KC did not only enter the television and movie scenes, she also got her feet wet on recording. Just recently, her second album titled KC was launched. Her carrier single Not like the Movies is currently enjoying good airplay on various radio stations.

With all these said, KC has proven her worth in almost all entertainment platforms, from theater to film, from recording to television, and now, sharpening her hosting skills via The Buzz. Indeed, KC substantiates the word versatile.

A hit with Winfrey, Charice Pempengco tries to win over teens

NEW YORK (AP) – Charice already has won over the mom market.

The teen wunderkind from the Philippines has been wowing audiences with her big voice and Celine Dion covers on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," ''The Oprah Winfrey Show" and other shows for the past two years. This week, she appeared on Winfrey's show for the fourth time.

But as she releases her self-titled debut album this week, Charice finds herself with a serious challenge as she tries to translate her success with an adult audience to her peers.

"I've been singing big songs, and this is actually the first time they are going to hear me sing Justin Bieber-type of songs, Miley Cyrus-type of songs," the 18-year-old said recently. "I'm just excited for all the teenagers to hear my album."

Had Charice come along around the era of Dion or Whitney Houston, two of her idols, it would have been easier to make that move. Back then, big-ballad singers with towering voices dominated pop radio.

These days, it's the grooves behind the big voice that matter.

David Foster, the Grammy-winning mentor behind Charice, probably knows that better than anyone. A legendary producer who has made hits for Houston, Dion, Barbra Streisand, Toni Braxton and dozens of other top names, Foster understands his sound is not what makes hits on pop radio anymore (although he still makes hits as the producer behind multiplatinum stars Josh Groban and Michael Buble).

"I knew if I produced the album, it would be adult-oriented. It would skew older. It would be maybe a quick, easy sale, but ultimately, it's very, very hard to skew younger after you start older, so we made a conscious decision to skew young first," he said. "I don't want to say that we crumbled under the pressure of having to go youthful, but I think we hit it square on."

Though Foster and his sister Jaymes are the album's executive producers, they left most of the music-making to younger writers and producers like Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, whose hits include Beyonce's "Halo" and Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love."

The album's first single is "Pyramid," featuring singer Iyaz.

"I just thought like, teenagers are falling in love ... they love this very catchy and very romantic words from all these young artists," Charice said. "That's why I thought that this album ... they are gonna love it, all the lyrics, all the melody and all the music."

So far, "Pyramid" is No. 2 on the dance charts, but it has not yet translated to pop radio. Foster is aware of the challenge it takes to make a hit, but he thinks Charice has a lot to add to the scene.

"There is a lack of organic music right now, and it's fine — it's just the phase that we're in," he explains. "I think there is room for some more musicality."

There's no denying Charice has that. During a recent interview, the diminutive singer belted out "Pyramid" on request, performed a stirring rendition of Houston's "I Will Always Love You" for an audience of four, then continued to sing even on her way out the door.

Singing has consumed Charice, born Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco, since she was a child growing up in the Philippines. Raised with her brother by a single mother, she sang in local contests and appeared on TV talent shows in the Philippines and in South Korea.

Fans posted clips of her on YouTube, and she became a sensation. Soon, she was invited to sing on "Ellen," then on "Oprah Winfrey," and linked up with Foster.

So far, her rise has unfolded like a fairy tale. But Charice knows there are hurdles, like trying to capture US audiences.

"It's really, really hard ... there's a lot of great pop stars here. ... They're all talented," she said. "I don't know if Americans are going to love me because I'm from other country."

But Foster said it is only a matter of time before there's an Asian superstar in the United States, and he believes Charice might be the one.

"Being a great singer is not enough, and she has the entire package," he said.

He adds: "She's a little bit like Michael Jackson in the head ... Michael Jackson was very soft-spoken and quiet and all that, but he was genius inside his head. He knew exactly where he was going, and she truly is the master of her own destiny."

Charice launches international debut on 'Oprah'

Charice is now a self-assured young lady of 18, poised to conquer the world with more fanfare that any “gifted little girl from halfway around the world” has ever gotten in recent pop music history. On May 11, a day after her birthday, the launch of Charice’s self-titled international debut finally happened on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," no less.

Performing the Billboard chart-topping dance single “Pyramid” with singer/rapper Iyaz and the legendary David Foster on piano, Charice’s command of the stage and her stunning delivery shows that she is slowly maturing into a performer to truly watch out for.

On the episode titled “The World’s Most Talented Kids” (which also had Justin Bieber as guest), Oprah introduced Charice by calling her “one of the most talented young people we’ve ever had on this show.” In a video clip, Oprah recalled Charice’s first appearance on the show in 2008, where she sang “I Have Nothing.” It was, said Oprah, “the performance that sent shivers up my spine.”

In the same video, Charice talked about her sad past, mentioning a memory at three year old of her father brandishing a shotgun at her mother and, by age seven, joining “a hundred” singing contests to put food on the table. It was just the perfect back story to make her success all the more compelling.

Greeted with a warm hug by the show’s inimitable host, a slightly breathless Charice said, “I can’t believe this, it’s amazing.”

“I'm really, really excited because this is actually my first ever Pop/R&B album because I'd been singing, you know, Whitney Houston's songs and Celine Dion's songs… And now, I can't believe that these are my own songs,” she told Oprah.

Foster, who was seated with the audience that time, turned a little emotional as well when Oprah asked him about Charice, where he also revealed that he’d agreed to be her godfather. Later, the smile on Foster’s face when Charice hit her big note on “Pyramid” just reflected pure pride.

Today, Charice has put her troubled past behind her and, according to the video, is now just “singing for pure joy.” And why not, when in a span of just two years she’s belted the big ballads and wowed the crowd alongside her idol Celine Dion and Foster himself, appeared on several American TV shows, performed at venues like the Madison Square Garden, and had many other amazing opportunities any fellow Filipino with dreams of living the American Dream would die for.

Talking with Oprah, Charice also shared that she gave her mom a house for Mother’s Day, saying, “It’s the best feeling I [ever] felt.”

Clearly, Charice has not forgotten where she’s come from. Before closing the show with a co-written piece with Foster titled “In This Song,” Charice told Oprah, “I just want to dedicate this song to you, Oprah. Thank you for believing in me from the beginning and I love you. And what’s more special about this song is this is actually the story of my life.”

With another video montage of her life playing in the background, Charice delivered the emotional song, whose lyrics, “I’m never far from home if I give my heart, my song, my all… in this song,” also underscored how at home she was on any stage in the world.

Christian Bautista in a daring Bench billboard

Shedding off his publicly known conservative image, Asian balladeer Christian Bautista said he’s just loosening up a bit in his latest Bench billboard.

Christian’s mega billboard caught many by surprise, as he was topless, showing off his well-toned body. At first, many thought it was another model until they realized that it really was Christian in the Bench billboard.

The singer revealed in his “Showbiz News Ngayon” interview aired May 12 that he prepared for the shoot.

“I really worked hard for that. It’s also to spice things up. I’d like thank Bench for that. It’s time also, (because) it’s summer. You really gotta work out, be fit and show everybody that you take care of your body,” Christian said.

The singer, though, is not about to display more skin. He assured everyone that would will still remain wholesome despite the sexy ad.

“It’s the right kind of sexy, right form. I’m not gonna go ‘bold star’ anytime soon or (appear in) underwear. That’s just really my limit siguro,” he stressed.

But Christian is open to explore a whole new world in acting where he says he can experiment.

“Siguro sa mga role, it’s fine to make it more exciting. Right now things are changing. I’m loosening up. Sometimes, in an artist’s career, you really have to know (how) to spice things up,” he said.

The Bench billboard is, so far, Christian’s sexiest outing. In the past, he did the catwalk for Bench, although was wearing jeans and shirts.

Diether quashes romantic rumor with Cristine Reyes

Diether Ocampo maintains nothing is going on between him and Cristine Reyes as they "hardly know each other."

“Siyempre, ‘pag sinabi mo [kasing] kaibigan mo, matagal mo nang nakasama,” the actor said on "Showbiz News Ngayon."

Diether can only recall one incident when their paths crossed.

“We shot ‘Lupang Hinirang.’ We were able to have a small talk. Pero we hardly had an opportunity to really talk dahil nga pareho kaming busy,” he said.

The actor mentioned they nearly worked together on a TV project but it got shelved. “Siguro hindi naglapat pareho ang aming schedule,” the actor shared.

He, however, is open to becoming friends with Cristine.

“It’s leading to that. Maliit lang ang industriya natin. Imposible namang hindi magkita sa ABS. About time naman na makatrabaho mo ang mga artista na bago.”

Cristine, in one event, was teased by her friends when Diether showed up. The taunting blew out of proportion and it was construed that they have something going on between them.

Cristine immediately quashed any romantic involvement with the actor.

“No, loko lang. Nagloloko lang talaga ‘yon. Nagloloko lang ang mga kaibigan ko,” Cristine explained in a previous SNN episode.

Diether is very much on with his girlfriend of more than two years, Rima Ostwani. They’ve been rumored to have headed for Splitsville but it was proven untrue.

Cristine had broken up with Dennis Trillo and has since remained single. She’s concentrating on her career and love life is not a priority… yet. Her TV series will soon be launched on ABS-CBN.

Lucy knows how to live light

MANILA, Philippines - Lucy Torres-Gomez (photo) recently became a spokesperson in educating the public on how to Live Light and Live Right. The graceful dancing aficionado and svelte mother-wife believes how important it is to lead a life of balance and lightness.

Like Lucy, many modern women have to juggle work with their social obligations and family responsibilities. Often times their personal health becomes a last priority. What many don’t know is that their age causes their metabolism to slow down. They become prone to common lifestyle diseases like diabetes, heart diseases and obesity. Hence, women need to start making smarter health choices in the lifestyle they live and food they eat.

Lucy was guest speaker at the recent launch of C-Lium Fibre’s campaign where people learned that Living Light and Living Right all starts with caring for their bodies. Aside from her daily exercise and her dance routines, fiber has become a part of her daily regimen. She admits, “Richard introduced me to C-Lium Fibre but I prefer taking the capsules, it has helped me feel light. For me, the day is not complete if I don’t have my daily dose of C-Lium Fibre.” She adds, “The public can sometimes be harsh to public figures like me, so it is important that I look my best and always be in top form.”

With C-Lium Fibre’s newest spokesperson advocating the many health benefits of fiber, more women can now be enlightened in prioritizing their overall well being. Fiber is known to promote a healthy digestive system by regularizing bowel movement. It is also recognized by many health practitioners in helping lower bad cholesterol, blood sugar levels and helping reduce excess weight without starving the body.

Angelica tinalbugan si Eugene

Clap, clap, clap.

Nakakatawa at very light ang kuwento na idinirek at isinulat ni Chris Martinez for Star Cinema, Quantum, and OctoArts Films.

Graded B ng CEB ang pelikula.

Movie nina Aga at Regine finally matatapos na!

Photo is loading...
